Rugby World Cup: Borthwick and Farrell Satisfied with England's Performance against Fiji

England seemed on track for a comfortable win in their Rugby World Cup quarter-final against Fiji in Marseille. However, the 30-24 victory required hard work. Steve Borthwick expressed his satisfaction with the result and the team's resilience in challenging situations. Captain Owen Farrell also commended the team's performance.

England's Rugby World Cup quarter-final victory over Fiji proved far tougher than it appeared it might when they led 15-3 midway through the first half, but that did nothing to dampen the camp's spirits.

Fiji fought back from deep deficits twice during the match, notably drawing level at 24-24 late in the match before England ultimately pulled out a 30-24 victory.

Coach Steve Borthwick saw reasons to be pleased with the resiliency shown by his players.

Speaking to the media after the match, Borthwick said: "I thought the players were magnificent. The whole squad’s worked very, very hard to get that result tonight."

Borthwick continued, hinting at the criticism his team received before the tournament began.

He said: "A lot’s been written about this England team over this last period of time. What I see is a group of players who can rise to these occasions."

Borthwick continued on a similar theme when speaking with BBC Five Live, again insisting that there had been few believers in his side.

He said: "I am pleased for all the players. Let's not forget this team was written off, and we will be written off again going to Paris. We will make sure to prepare well and to do our best."

The England boss then turned to ITV to triple down. There, he said: "We don’t forget there’s a fair number of people who said we won’t make it out of the group and a fair number who said we would lose tonight and we're going to be written off again I’m sure. But this team is determined to be successful.”

Captain Owen Farrell was equally impressed with his team-mates. Speaking to ITV's live coverage, Farrell echoed the comments of his coach.

He said: "It feels good at the minute. Glad to get the job done and I’m glad we had the fight we did at the end against a top power outfit like Fiji."

Speaking to the BBC at full-time, Farrell said: "It was what we expected. They are a tough, tough team that can turn it on in the blink of an eye. I thought we started the game really well. We really got after it in that first half.

"We always knew Fiji were going to have some good patches and they did. To find a way to win and get through to the semi-finals is a big step forward, but we know we have plenty of work to do.”

While it was hardly a gritty match, there was plenty of flair on show from both sides. England did have to dig deep, particularly after seeing their healthy lead disappear late in the match.

Farrell snapped a field goal to break the tie, taking the points that were available.

He explained humbly: "The forwards did a great job and put it on the plate for us. I just had to knock it over.”

In next weekend's semi-final, England will compete against either South Africa or the host nation, France. Their goal is to set a new record by reaching their fifth final, a feat they currently share with New Zealand and Australia.
