The story so far
Jalen Brunson came to New York from North Texas last summer, and everything about it seemed like a typical New Century Knicks horror story, especially the kind that comes from the free agent market. Even if league authorities refuse to admit it, perhaps no one defines the "V" in "MVP" better than Brunson, whose first season in Manhattan changed the fortunes of two teams: the Dallas Mavericks, who had to rely on a series of veterans to fill out the roster from Kemba Walker to Cary. Kemba Walker to Kyrie Irving, the Knicks have found a backcourt leader willing to prove that his emergence in the 2022 playoffs was no fluke.
With career-best averages of 24 points and 6.2 assists per game, Brunson has stabilized the Knicks' backcourt lineup and become a reliable go-to guy on offense. Instead of desperately looking for late-season reinforcements mid-season (e.g. Patrick Beverley, Russell Westbrook), they had Brunson to lead the team. Once the playoffs began, Brunson maintained his playoff prowess, averaging 27.8 points per game, including 41 points in the final moments against Miami, albeit ultimately fruitlessly.
Brunson had a full summer: he married his high school sweetheart, Ali Marks, and the wedding had to be held early because he was on the U.S. team for the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Although the U.S. team finished a disappointing fourth in the tournament, Brunson was lauded for furthering his offensive and leadership skills, earning the trust of a coaching staff made up of championship coaches such as Steve Kerr and Erik Spoelstra.
